Frequently Asked Questions
How long do dried watercolour cakes last?
At least two years — if not indefinitely.
How do I know when the consistency is right?
Mix to a creamy but thick paste starting at a 1:1 ratio. Test by brushing a small amount onto watercolour paper — add more pigment if too transparent, more base if too opaque.
How long do mixed watercolours last?
In airtight jars: 1–3 months (longer if refrigerated). In aluminum tubes: longer still. Dried into cakes with glycerin: at least 2 years, if not indefinitely.
How do I store them?
Options include airtight glass jars, small aluminum tubes, or dried into pans/cakes. The base mixture stays good for about one month in a sealed glass jar.
Why is glycerin needed?
To prevent dried cakes from cracking. It can be added at any point while the mixture is still stirrable.
Will the cakes grow mold?
Dried cakes won’t mold. For wet paint, add a natural preservative like sodium benzoate (1 tsp. or less per batch) or a few drops of clove essential oil, and refrigerate to extend shelf life.
Will liquid dry out with tightly sealed lids?
Not if sealed properly in a full jar or airtight aluminum tube. Partially filled or improperly sealed containers will eventually dry out.
