Frequently Asked Questions
Can I paint oils directly over this gesso?
Yes — paint directly on the eco gesso. You can also add a traditional oil primer over it if you prefer that surface. Both work.
Do I need to apply sizing before the gesso?
Yes. Apply a layer of methyl cellulose glue directly to the raw canvas, let it dry, then apply 2–3 coats of gesso. Both the sizing and gesso mix are included in the kit.
Can I use it on pre-primed canvases?
Yes, absolutely.
Is the gesso white?
Yes — it already contains titanium dioxide pigment. No need to add white pigment.
Can I make black gesso?
The high titanium dioxide content means adding black pigment will produce grey, not black gesso.
How does it work with oil paints?
Our natural gesso is slightly more absorbent than acrylic gessos, which allows oil paint to bond more deeply with the ground — making the painting more archival.
Does it work for egg tempera?
Yes, absolutely.
What if the gesso is chalky and rubs off?
This means there’s not enough methyl cellulose in the mix. Brush one more layer of clear methyl cellulose over the dried gesso and let dry overnight. For future canvases, add 1–2 extra tablespoons of methyl cellulose glue to the gesso mix.
How long does mixed methyl cellulose last?
Up to 1 year if stored in a sterile, sealed jar. Contamination can cause mold growth and shorten shelf life.
Is it allergen-free?
Free of gluten and dairy. The kit does not contain nuts.
Is it vegan and cruelty-free?
Yes — 100% vegan and never tested on animals.
What is the return policy?
Full refunds on defective, damaged, or re-sellable returns.
